Frequently Asked Questions:

1. Do I need a referral or a physician prescription to come to physical therapy?

In most cases, a prescription is not required for pelvic floor physical therapy. Texas has “direct access” so that you can get evaluated and treated by a physical therapist as soon as possible. If you are experiencing pain or discomfort, you can call us at 915-209-7124 and make an appointment right away.

Note: Tricare Prime requires an authorization prior to first appointment and Medicare requires a physician prescription prior to PT evaluation.

2. What is pelvic rehab physical therapy?

Pelvic rehab physical therapy focuses on pelvic floor muscles, the surrounding regions like the spine and tailbone, hips, abdomen, glutes, thighs, and the connective tissues including scars. The treatments include manual therapy techniques, internal and external stretching and massage, exercises for strengthening and relaxing the pelvic floor. Pelvic rehabilitation also includes bladder and bowel retraining, core strengthening, and postural exercises to address complaints in these areas.

3. What should I expect on my first visit?

You will first meet with a Doctor of Physical Therapy to thoroughly review your intake forms and discuss your goals. A comprehensive external musculoskeletal examination and, if indicated, an internal examination of the pelvic floor muscles will be performed with your consent. Your physical therapist will explain what she found and her recommendations for treatment, as well as give you some exercises for home.

4. How is pelvic floor physical therapy different from kegels?

Kegel exercises contract the pelvic floor, but they are not the best thing to do for your pelvic health. Given the fact that many people are doing kegels incorrectly, we often find they are causing more harm than good. Only doing kegels for your pelvic floor is similar to going to the gym but only doing bicep curls. We do not initially recommend strengthening to most of the patients we evaluate at El Paso Pelvic Health. There are many things effecting your pelvic floor muscles, therefore there are many ways to treat them. Schedule an appointment with us and we will teach you how to have better pelvic health!

5. Why am I coming to pelvic floor physical therapy when I have pain in my abdomen?

The pelvic floor muscles can have trigger points (think knots in your neck) and those irritable spots can refer pain other places. We often see this in the abdomen with pain that feels like it is coming from the ovaries, or the surrounding pelvic structures like the groin, the hips, the glutes, and the back. This is why it is important to assess more than just your pelvic floor muscles.

If you are suffering from pelvic floor dysfunction, you are not alone!
